Specimen: 2014-053

This sample is a coarse grained marble. The texture is overall granoblastic with random grain orientation. Maximum grain size is upwards of 4 mm, minimum is .5 mm, the modal size is 3 to 2 mm. Grain boundaries are mostly sutured or straight. Twinning of calcite/dolomite crystals is ubiquitous, orientation of twin lamellae was only observed along rhomb edges and bisecting acute rhomb angle. A few twin lamellae show stress curvature. Non-carbonate accessory minerals are extremely minimal (~1%) and generally too small for definitive identification. Quartz is the most common, occurring as rounded grains within carbonate crystals and as sutured crystals at boundaries, generally in a size range from .25 to .5 mm. Other unidentified, and very rare, accessory minerals include isotropic minerals, very rare opaques, and elongate grains with second order birefringence too small to identify. There is no appreciable weathering in this sample or visible macrostructure such as foliation.
