Instructor Fran Gale discusses mortar sample with students.

In August, NCPTT held a workshop for preservation professionals interested in learning techniques for the analysis of historic masonry mortars. Twelve participants, including personnel from Cane River Creole NHP and San Antonio Missions NHP, donned lab coats to practice the acid digestion technique for isolating aggregate in mortar samples. The three-day workshop was held August 12-14, 2014, at NCPTT’s laboratory facilities in Natchitoches, LA, and taught by Professor Fran Gale, Director of the Architectural Conservation Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin.
