Early archeological excavations of this early American fort were unauthorized and destructive to artifacts and history. Many artifacts ended up missing. Problems at Fort Pulaski National Monument and other federal sites lead to the passage of legislation making excavations without a permit illegal. Since the passage of the law, archeologists have conducted excavations which have lead to artifacts being found, preserved, and maintained. Without the history and preservation of Fort Pulaski, many federal protections would not be in place today. To learn more about the restoration of Fort Pulaski National Monument, check out this link.
