The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training announces 2018 internships, pending the availability of funding. We have opportunities for paid internships. We just need you! A variety of projects are available working across disciplines. Interns will have an opportunity to work in one of the following programs:

  • Archeology and Collections
  • Architecture and Engineering
  • Historic Landscapes
  • Materials Conservation

Most of the projects are six-month full-time internships unless noted otherwise.
Internship opportunities are available for the following projects:

Historic Landscapes

Inventory and Mapping of Campus Trees. The Intern will be responsible for inventorying and mapping trees on the campus of Northwestern State University of Louisiana. The project area includes trees within the boundary of the Northwestern State University Historic District. The inventory will serve as baseline documentation for management of the campus trees.

Materials Conservation

Student analyses sanmple using a portable X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer.

Climate Change and Salts in Masonry #1. The intern will look at approaches to mitigate salt damage on historic masonry buildings. Adaptation and mitigation strategies for salt damage in masonry buildings run a gambit of approaches. This research will test five commercially available anti efflorescence treatments on brick masonry and evaluate their performance at limiting salt damage by slowing or eliminating liquid water movement through masonry. The work will require constructing test walls, applying treatments, and evaluating scientific data.


Climate Change and Salts in Masonry #2. The intern will look at weathering of coatings for historic masonry buildings. This research will focus on five commercially available anti efflorescence treatments on brick masonry. The work will require designing experiments, applying ASTM standards for weathering, using artificial weathering, and evaluating scientific data.

Evaluation of Paint Primers on Weathered Wood. The intern will complete research on the durability of paint and primer systems for historic wood. The work evaluates wood samples have been treated with a combination of paint systems and builds on previous work conducted at NCPTT. The intern will continue using artificial weathering on treated wood samples, and evaluate samples using color measurement, contact angle goniometry, and visual appearance changes. Emphasis will be on writing a final technical report. This is a ten-week internship.

Study of Freeze Thaw Cycles on Window Glazes. The intern will complete research on the effects of freeze thaw cycles on window glazes on wood windows. The intern will evaluate various window glazing compounds and builds on previous work conducted at NCPTT. The intern will continue freeze thaw cycles using a freeze thaw chamber and evaluate samples using scientific methods. Emphasis will be on writing a final technical report. This is a ten-week internship.

Anti-graffiti Coatings on Corten Steel. The intern will conduct an investigation into anti-graffiti coatings for outdoor weathering steel. The proposed investigation will aim to explore the possibility of coatings as a solution to the multifaceted problem of graffiti removal from weathering steel, taking into account aesthetic and material considerations regarding the use of coatings on weathering steel for graffiti removal purposes. Graffiti materials such as aerosol spray paint and Sharpie marker easily penetrate the distinctive patina of weathering steel, which is more porous and rougher in profile than that of other metals commonly used in outdoor art and architecture such as stainless steel, copper alloys, or aluminum. This is a ten-week internship.


Applicants should demonstrate skills and knowledge in preservation technology. This may include but not be limited to documentation, condition assessments, literature reviews, laboratory or field research, materials testing, hands-on preservation treatments, or other related skills. Undergraduates, graduate students, or recent graduates will be considered. Studies in in disciplines such as architecture, anthropology, conservation, chemistry, engineering, geology, geography, preservation, etc. will be preferred.

How long are the internships?

Most internships last six months unless otherwise noted, beginning and ending dates are negotiable. Please note your available dates for the internship.

Will I get paid?

Yes. Our interns are short-term employees of Northwestern State University. Compensation is based on experience, including academic experience. Depending on your personal spending habits, the compensation provided is typically more than sufficient to cover living expenses during your stay in Natchitoches.

Is housing provided?

Housing is not provided. However, Natchitoches is a college town and there are usually plenty of sublets and short-term rentals available.

We do accept applications from foreign nationals (non-US citizens). However, these individuals are responsible for obtaining their own visa. Please ensure that your application materials are in English.
