Mr. Bryan Haley

Bryan is the Coordinator of Remote Sensing Applications at the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Mississippi, where he is also a research associate.  He is a four-year veteran of Prospection in Depth, and recently his skills brought him to the attention of  PBS’ Time Team America.  Bryan is one of their go-to geophysics guys.  If you haven’t seen the show yet and you want to see him in action before our workshop, be sure to tune in to the New Philadelphia episode on PBS on Wednesday, July 22, at 8 eastern/7 central.

As Bryan describes it on his website:

I specialize in archaeological applications of geophysics, especially magnetics, electrical imaging, electromagnetics, and ground penetrating radar (GPR). Of particular interest is how multiple techniques can be used together to make cultural resource management and research archaeology more efficient. I also focus on other geospatial technologies such as airborne remote sensing (including thermal infrared), land surveying, geographic information systems (GIS), and the global positioning system (GPS). In terms of more conventional archaeology, I work primarily with prehistoric and contact-period Native American sites in the southeastern United States.

His received a B.S. in anthropology and a minor in computer science from the University of Kentucky in 1999.  He obtained his M.A. in anthropology from the University of Mississippi in 2002, with funding from NASA.

Steve, like Bryan, was there in the early days of Prospection in Depth, serving as an instructor in 2006 and 2007.  Steve is a senior archaeologist with the National Park Service’s Midwest Archeological Center.  Steve received his M.A. from Iowa State University in 1984.  While much of his work has occurred in the prairie-plains area of the U.S., his geophysics expertise has carried him to all corners of the country, as you can judge just from looking at a few titles of his voluminous list of publications.

He is one of the pioneers of the use of geophysics for archaeological applications, and he is well known in the geophysics community for his long-running annual workshop, “Current Archaeological Prospection Advances for Non-Invasive Remote Sensing…”, which is now entering its 20th year.  NCPTT partnered with Steve in May of 2009 to host the 19th annual course at Los Adaes, and snippets of the workshop were captured as a video-podcast.  To hear Steve’s thoughts on the role of geophysics in archaeology, check out the vodcast below:

Dr. Jarrod D. Burks

Jarrod joins us from Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc., which is one of the leading firms in the central U.S. for near-surface geophysical survey techniques on archaeological sites.  For the past decade Jarrod has served as the director of geophysical survey and interpretation at OVAC, Ltd.  Working among the magnetically-rich rocks of the Ohio Valley, Jarrod has developed a reputation as an archaeologist capable of disentangling archaeological signal from especially noisy geological and other  non-cultural background noise.

He earned his B.A. from the University of Illinois in 1994, followed by his M.A. from Ohio State University two years later.  Then, in 2004, he received his Ph.D. in anthropology from Ohio State University.  The breadth of his expertise is visible in the numerous publications and reports he has produced in recent years.
