There are more and more schools offering degree programs, certifications or continued learning courses in the trades like carpentry. The Campbell Center in Illinois offers short courses in wood, log, timber frame and window restoration and Historic Windsor, Inc in Vermont offers a variety of preservation skills and technology courses . The Fox Maple School in Maine offers timber frame workshops as does the Yestermorrow School in Vermont. A more complete list of opportunities for Preservation Trades Education is available through the Preservation Trades Network. Whether hewing a log, framing up a  new building or repairing an historic window sash, Carpenters keep our built environment strong. There’s some new construction happening among our Facilities Maintenance partners, but I’d hazard a guess that a lot of you are looking for woodworking skills that can be applied to the historic structures in your Park.

… Update with additional discussion of Historic Preservation aspects …

The Learning and Development division of the NPS also sponsors carpentry and preservation-related workshops–usually they’re hosted by the Historic Preservation Training Center or the Mott Training Center of the California State Parks.  They’ll be advertised on this website so check back often.  And lets not forget the wealth of technical information available through our friends at the National Center for Preservation Training and Technology that’s available through workshops or through on-demand content.

Resources

Perhaps you’re looking for a resource for to help you calculate the different components of a built structure, like stairs or a roof pitch.  Or you don’t quite remember the geometric formulas for figuring the area of a trapezoid. You’ll find that information along with lots of other great stuff. Not sure which wood to use? Find a chart with properties of woods found all over the world. Keep coming back to see what we have to offer. Better yet–let us know what you want to see on this website.

I really did like seeing the Position Description Library on this page. I just wonder if more emphasis should be placed on the Library as this does include the description of what will be expected for that position. Information from this Library may assist individuals on the Maintenance path.
