By popular demand, the Webinar hosted by Janet Zellar, U.S. Forest Service National Accessibility Program Manager, is now available to NPS. Although the Webinar is specific to Forest Service trails, the information presented provides key concepts and background on trail accessibility guidelines that are similar to the draft U.S. Access Board Outdoor Develop Areas Guidelines, which will, when finalized, apply to NPS. At this time, the Forest Service Trail Accessibility guidelines, along with the Draft Access Board Outdoor Developed Guidelines serve as best practices for the NPS and can be utilized right now when developing projects that include newly constructed or altered pedestrian use trails that are connected to an accessible trailhead. NPS follows the same federal accessibility laws cited in the Webinar, with additional guidance provided in the 2006 Management Policies and DO#42. Questions regarding accessibility should be directed to your park or regional accessibility coordinator.
