What is good and compatible design for additions to historic buildings and districts?  Is compatibility an objective? Is compatibility a matter of style and tradition, or an exploration of metaphors? How do we interpret the National Park Service standards? These questions are debated in academia and the press, but seldom discussed among architects.

The AIA Taliesin Colloquium will explore issues that are important to the practice of historic architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West provides a retreat atmosphere in a living landmark of American architecture. Scottsdale provides a beautiful natural setting with a variety of activities for attendees, family, and friends.

Speakers

The Colloquium leaders will include Frederick B. Fisher, FAAR, Vincent Michael, Ph.D., and Brian Goeken, AICP.

  • Mr. Fisher has designed buildings for important cultural and institutional sites all over the United States. His portfolio of projects that insert new buildings into historic environments is most relevant to the topic at hand.
  • Dr. Michael is an author, Executive Director of the Global Heritage Fund, holds the John H. Bryan Chair in Historic Preservation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is a Trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
  • Mr. Goeken is Chief of the Technical Preservation Services Division of the National Park Service. He formerly served as Deputy Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Planning and Development. The Technical Preservation Services Branch writes, administers, and interprets the “Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.”

Program
The program will open with a presentation and reception on Friday evening, October 18, 2013. The core of the program is presentation and discussion with panelists on Saturday morning. Attendees will discuss topics with the speakers after lunch on Saturday afternoon before the panel wraps up the colloquium. The Saturday program will conclude with refreshments and a special evening tour of Taliesin West.
