Petrographic Description: 

Specimen: 2014-027 This specimen is a fossiliferous limestone. The limestone is grain supported and has a sparite cement matrix, much of it originating as syntaxial overgrowth. Allochems constitute about 85 percent of slide area. These criteria define the limestone as a grainstone. Allochem composition is about 95 percent bioclasts and 5 percent mixed peloids and ooids. These estimates and degree of sorting classify this limestone as a sorted biosparite. Most all bioclasts have micritic envelopes. Identifiable bioclasts are mostly echinoderm parts; bryozoan, brachiopod, bivalve, univalve-mollusk, and foraminifera are also identifiable. Maximum dimension of echinoderms is approximately 1.4 mm and the modal range is about .5 to .7 mm. Maximum dimensions of less common bioclasts are as follows: bryozoan 2.8 mm, brachiopod 3 mm, bivalve 4 mm, univalve mollusk .9 mm, and foraminifera 1 mm. Ooid and peloid maximum size is about .5 mm and the modal range is around .3 mm. Rare authigenic quartz is present with maximum grain size near .05 mm. Extant voids are less than 1 percent of slide area and are interparticle. The degree of allochem preservation indicates this limestone was lithified before significant compaction. Elongated bioclasts are oriented in a uniform direction producing minimal laminated texture that is not visible in hand the sample. MP 7/21/2015
