Petrographic Description: 

Specimen: 2014-029 This specimen is a fossiliferous limestone. The limestone is grain supported and lithified prior to significant compaction. The matrix cement is sparite, with some instances of syntaxial overgrowth. Allochems comprise approximately 90 percent of slide area. These criteria define the limestone as a grainstone. Allochem composition is about 60 percent bioclasts, 20 percent ooids, and 20 percent peloids. These estimates and degree of sorting characterize the limestone as a sorted biopelsparite. Identifiable bioclasts are predominantly elongate fragments probably corresponding to bivavles but some brachiopod fragments are also clearly present. Other identifiable bioclasts include echinoderms and bryozoans. Most all bioclasts have micritic envelopes. Maximum bivalve fragment dimension is 3 by .2 mm (not measuring sinuosity) and a modal range is around 2 to 1 mm. Maximum echinoderm size is near 1 mm and for bryozoans .8 mm. Maximum ooid/peloid size is .4, and modal range is around .35 to .2. Far less than 1 percent of slide area is extant void space, mostly interparticle with a maximum dimension near .3mm. Authigenic quartz is very rarely present in ooids with a maximum dimension of about .04 mm. Elongated bioclasts are oriented in a uniform direction producing minimal laminated texture that is not visible in hand sample. 7/14/15 MP
