The Restoration Technology in the Russian Necropolis by Julia Loginova and Anna Loshchenko

The State Museum of city sculpture is one of the oldest museum of St. Petersburg. Its collection is outstanding (2000 monuments). One of the museum departments is the necropolis of Art Masters. The distinguished people of Russian history found their last resting there. In the necropolis there are more than 1,000 graves made of  bronze, iron, and various types of natural stone. Carbonate rocks are large represented, for example: limestone and marble, different colors and textures.

The life of the tombstones of the XVIII – XIX centuries was quite complicated.  The reorganization of the cemetery and the Second World War became the causes of considerable losses and destruction. Furthermore, the beautiful headstones created by famous Russian and European masters are located in the open air, an aggressive urban environment. As a result there are a lot of the traces of destruction.

The Museum has the great tradition of conservation and restoration of city status.In 2007 we organized the department of restoration and maintenance of city monuments. The restoration and the preservation of gravestones are one of the most important aims of this department. We use new technologies and materials, including the laser for removing black cortical layers. Sometimes we had to make copies of the elements of grave.”
