Beginning this year, applicants will apply for the 2013 Preservation Technology and Training (PTT) grants online at www.grants.gov. Using the system is new to NCPTT and we hope to have the application online by September 30th. THE GRANT DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 15, 2012.
Grants.gov enables grant-making agencies and the grant community to come together to make grants management easier and more efficient for everyone. State, local and tribal governments, colleges and universities, research institutions, non-profits and other organizations will now have the ability to find more than $500 billion in grants annually, from more than 1,000 different grant programs at one online location.
NCPTT encourages you to prepare early so that you are able to submit a grant application to the 2013 PTT Grants program. Registration with Grants.gov takes approximately 3-5 business days, but you may need to allow several weeks to completion all five steps listed below.
REGISTERING WITH GRANTS.GOV
The first step to unlocking grant opportunities at Grants.gov is to become a registered organization. For many universities and educational institutions, this has already been done by your office of sponsored research. You will need to work with them to submit an application through Grants.gov. If your organization is not a university or educational institution, you will needs to register with Grants.gov. There are five easy steps.
STEP 1: Obtain DUNS Number
The Data Universal Number System (DUNS) number is a unique nine-character number that identifies your organization. It is a tool of the federal government to track how federal money is distributed. If your organization does not already have a DUNS number, you will need to obtain one from the Dun and Bradstreet website at http://fedgov.dnb.com/webform. It usually takes 1-2 business days to process the web form. Alternately, you may request the DUNS number by phone (1-866-705-5711) and it will be provided immediately.
STEP 2: Register with SAM
Ensure that your organization is registered with the System for Award Management (SAM), which is a free website that consolidates information needed to do business with the federal government. An authorizing official of your organization must register at www.sam.gov. You will need a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) or an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for your organization to register. If you have a TIN, your SAM registration will take 3-5 business days to process. If you need an EIN please allow up to 2 weeks for registration in the SAM system.
When your organization registers with SAM, you will need to designate the E-Biz Point of Contact (E-biz POC). That person will be given a special code called an “MPIN.” This code will allow E-biz POC to designate which staff members from your organization are allowed to submit applications electronically through Grants.gov. Staff members from your organization designated to submit applications are called Authorized Organization Representatives (AOR). This step can take three to five business days or up to two weeks.
STEP 3: Username & Password on Grants.gov
Next, you will register at Grants.gov to become an Authorized Organization Representative (AOR). An AOR creates a username and password to serve as “electronic signature” when submitting an application on behalf of their organization. You will complete a profile on Grants.gov at https://apply07.grants.gov/apply/OrcRegister. You will need your DUNS number to complete this step and create your username and password. This process can be completed in the same day.
STEP 4: AOR Authorization
The E-Business Point of Contact (E-Biz POC) at your organization must login to Grants.gov to confirm you as an Authorized Organization Representative (AOR). Please note that there can be more than one AOR for your organization. In some cases the E-Biz POC is also the AOR for an organization. This step can usually be accomplished in one day, however, the time depends on responsiveness of your E-Biz POC.
STEP 5: TRACK AOR STATUS
At any time, you can track your AOR status by logging in with your username and password. Login as an Applicant (enter your username & password you obtained in Step 3) at https://apply07.grants.gov/apply/login.faces?userType=applicant&cleanSession=1
