The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training supports the development of NPS Career Academies as part of the NPS Director’s Call to Action #30, Tools of the Trade. NCPTT is working across disciplines and drawing from its in-house expertise in educational technology, software development, and preservation technology to advance the career academies.
NCPTT staff members are instrumental in creating online collaborative learning communities for the Facilities Maintenance Academy and the Cultural Resources Academy. These tools will foster mentoring relationships between National Park Service Employees and disseminate the latest course offerings to parks across the country. NCPTT’s Sean Clifford and Kris Vidos are using web development tools like WordPress, BuddyPress and CUNY Commons to bring this project to fruition.
NCPTT is also working to develop content for the career academies. NCPTT hosted NPS cultural landscape professionals engaged in the development of online training resources. Through a cooperative agreement with Northwest State University of Louisiana (NSU), the NPS landscape architects and horticulturalists worked with NSU education and media specialists to outline, script, and video segments to be included in two multi-media trainings: Managing for Historic Character and Introduction to Preservation Maintenance. Filming took place at Cane River Creole National Historical Park and Natchez National Historical Park. The two courses will be included in the NPS Cultural Resource Academy.
The career academies will serve as a learning and development websites and clearing houses for NPS employees and partners. They will provide new tools and development opportunities to employees so that they may reach their full career potential. The academies teach essential competencies in 12 career fields.
