The National Center recently joined the Christman Company in supporting a Preservation Trades Network workshop to rebuild carriages for two reproduction 18 lb. Revolutionary War guns at Fort Sumter National Monument. The participants, mostly students from the American College of the Building Arts and the Savannah Technical College, began by reviewing historic plans and examining the existing deteriorated carriages. Under the instruction of Christian & Sons, Inc., Laura Saeger and Lisa Sasser, students learned historic construction techniques and gained experience using traditional tools (including 150-year-old spoke shaves). The fort now has new carriages that will last for several years to come.
