The volume contains papers and stories presented at the symposium Contaminated Collections: Preservation, Access and Use
held at the National conservation Training Center in shepherdstown, West Virginia on 6 – 9 April 2001. The conference was hosted by the society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC), the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) and the National Park Service (NPS) and founded primarily under a grant from the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT). Additional support was provided by the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC), the AIC Objects Specialty Group, the AIC Research and Technical Studies Group and the National Museum of Natural History, Department of Anthropology, Repatriation Office.
