Example Schedule for 11th Grade Science Students

8:30 AM Arrive at the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, NSU campus, Natchitoches, Louisiana.
8:40 AM Introduction to NCPTT, 20 minutes.
9:00 AM Introduction to the study of Cultural Objects, Conservation Scientist for a Day, 20 minutes.
9:20 AM Introduction to Pottery and Ceramics, 20 minutes.
Students will work in groups of three to document, analyse, and report on a French colonial pottery shard.
9:40 AM Documentation: to include photographing, measuring, and describing the object.
10:20 AM Break, 10 minutes.
10:30 AM Analysis: Students will continue to work in their groups but will rotate through three 30 minute round robin sessions in order to determine chemical and physical properties of the object.
Session 1: Optical Microscopy: looking at tempers under magnification, acid test.
Session 2: Chemical Spot Tests: simple spot tests to determine chemical composition.
Session 3: Portable X-ray Diffraction Analysis: taking a spectra, analyzing results.
12:00 PM Lunch, Bring your own bag lunch, 30 minutes.
12:30 PM Wrap up and report assignment, including rubric.
1:00 PM Students board buses and depart for school.
