Cane River Heritage Area

NCPTT hosted a two-day symposium sponsored by the Cane River Creole National Historical Park in celebration of Black History month on February 15-16, 2006. Students, faculty, and community members gathered from around the area to hear notable scholars address a diverse range of topics related to the region’s African-American cultural history. Presentations included Dr. Janis Hutchinson (U of Houston) on African-American Oral Remembrances in Natchitoches, Tommy Whitehead (NSU) on Clementine Hunter, and Dr. Caryn Crosse Bell (U Mass Lowell) on Toward Universalism in African-American Culture, and several others.
